Scott Blumenthal

EVP, Television, LIN Media

Scott Blumenthal began his broadcast career in 1970 at WTWO in Terre Haute, Ind. He joined WRTV in 1975 and in 1983 joined WISH-TV as the local sales manager, where he was promoted to general sales manager in 1988. In 1994, he was named president and general manager of WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Mich.

In 1999, he returned to WISH-TV as president and general manager. Blumenthal was named regional VP of LIN Television Corporation in 2002; and in 2006, was named EVP, Television.

Blumenthal has served on advisory boards for the television company BIAS and Marshall Marketing, a consumer research company. He is a past president of the Central Indiana Muscular Dystrophy Association and has also served on the board of the Indianapolis Community Relations Council and the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee. In 2005, he was the chairman of the Indianapolis 500 Festival Board. He is a past chair of both the Michigan and Indiana Broadcast Associations. Blumenthal is currently member of the TVB and NAB Boards and is a member of the executive committee of the CBS Board of Affiliates.

Bruce Brauer

SVP, Creative Services/Advertising & Promotions/Marketing Agency, CBS Television Stations Group

Bruce Brauer is SVP, creative services/advertising and promotions/marketing agency for the CBS Television Stations Group and continues to hold the title of creative director for WCBS, The New York flagship station.

As the station group's liaison with the CBS Marketing Group, he is responsible for the marketing, on-air promotion, and all design and creative initiatives for the 28 owned and operated television stations.

Brauer works closely with the station group's local creative services directors to facilitate better communication within the group, share best practices, improve workflow and develop graphics packages along with on-air promotional campaigns that can be used by multiple stations to create cost efficiencies.

Before joining WCBS as director of creative services in December 2005, Brauer worked at the premier visual effects house, Charlex, for five years and then founded Little Siberia Inc., a broadcast design company specializing in on-air promotions, IDs, launch campaigns, commercials and mnemonics. He directed film, video and web projects for, among others, HBO, American Express, Lifetime Television, Cinemax, CBS, ABC and NBC.

Before Little Siberia, Brauer spent seven years at WNBC New York as a senior graphic designer and was later promoted to design director. He has received 21 Emmy Awards and a few Gold, Silver and Bronze PromaxBDA Awards.

Bill Butler

VP, Programming & Promotion, Sinclair Broadcast Group

Bill Butler is the VP of programming and promotion for Sinclair Broadcast Group, and he is also part of the management team that supervises news programming at the corporate level. Before that, he was the director of programming at then Disney-owned KCAL, Los Angeles. Butler has also been programming and/or promotion manager at TV stations in Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. He has also been promotion manager for TBS and CNN, and stations in Indianapolis and Kansas City. He began his career as the on-air promotion writer-producer at WLWT, Cincinnati, the AVCO-owned NBC affiliate.

Scot Chastain

SVP, Affiliate Marketing & Development, NBC Television Network
PromaxBDA Vice Chairman & Conference Committee Chair

Scot Chastain has been the Senior Vice President, Affiliate Marketing and Development, NBC Television Network since the spring of 2008. He reports to Ted Harbert, Chairman, NBC Broadcasting.

In his current role, Chastain oversees the bi-coastal NBC Affiliate Marketing groups that develop and distribute all network marketing, sales and advertising materials for the 234 owned and affiliate television stations. The groups’ efforts ensure promotion of the network across all prime, news, sports, Olympics, daytime, late night and Saturday morning dayparts on local station platforms. In addition, Chastain works on existing and developing new business projects that involve the partnership between the network, stations and their respective ownership groups. He also serves as Executive Producer of NBC's key client presentations plus major affiliate business and marketing meetings.

A key member of NBC transition teams, Chastain served on the KNTV/San Francisco Switch Project and was part of the NBC Universal Integration within TV distribution, TV studio and marketing. He also played a role with the Telemundo network transition, as well as top leadership positions for the marketing and launches of both NBC WeatherPlus and nbcolympics.com.

Chastain also serves on the NBC Universal Marketing Council, a group composed of marketing leaders from all NBCU businesses.

He joined NBC Entertainment in January 1995 as Manager, Affiliate Advertising & Promotion Services and was promoted to Director in 1997 and to Vice President of the department in 1999.

In local markets, prior to joining NBC, Chastain served as Director of Marketing and Promotion at WDSU-TV, the NBC affiliate in New Orleans where he oversaw the entire station brand, marketing, media activities and planning. From 1991 to 1993, he was a Senior Promotion Producer and later, Interim Marketing Director at WXII-TV, the NBC affiliate in Winston-Salem, N.C. Before WXII-TV, Scot was at KBTX-TV, the CBS affiliate in Bryan, Texas for 6 years, serving a variety of roles including Production, Promotion, Operations Manager and Special Projects Executive Producer. Before moving to the CBS affiliate, Chastain spent 5-plus years in a variety of production roles for KAMU-TV (PBS) in College Station, Texas including local freelance production positions for other national/regional sports networks.

He is currently serves as Vice Chairman on the Board of Directors of PromaxBDA, a marketing and design trade association. Elected to the board originally in 2005, he served as treasurer from 2007-2008 and for four consecutive years, has led the all-important Conference Committee.

His creative and production work has been recognized by numerous organizations such as PromaxBDA, local branches of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Sean Compton

President, Programming and Entertainment, Tribune Broadcasting

Sean Compton is president of programming and entertainment for Tribune Broadcasting where he oversees programming for 40 Tribune and local TV television stations, and for WGN America, Tribune Broadcasting’s nationally distributed cable, satellite and telco network.

While at the helm of Tribune Broadcasting’s programming department, Compton has been responsible for all of its high-profile acquisitions including “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Entourage,” “30 Rock,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Monk” and “The Unit,” as well as an extensive movie library.

Compton, who spent 19 years in radio before joining Tribune, was formerly the head of programming for Premiere Radio Networks, owned by Clear Channel Communications, where he created and developed radio programs and features built around such high-profile celebrities and entertainers as Ryan Seacrest, Whoopi Goldberg, Ty Pennington, sportscaster Bob Costas, CNBC’s financial expert Maria Bartiromo and business mogul Donald Trump.

Compton began his media career at the age of 11 when he started a radio station in his parent’s basement in Indiana. By age 14, Compton had a small business filming weddings and local events. In 1989, while still in high school, he began working at WCNB (Connersville, IN) and WQLK (Richmond, IN). Bypassing college, at age 18 Compton went to work at WOWO Radio (Fort Wayne, IN) as a DJ. By 1992, he was a producer and on-air personality at WLW radio in Cincinnati, OH (owned by Jacor). The next year, he became program director of WSAI radio in Cincinnati, OH.

In 1995, Compton moved to Jacor’s corporate office as a programming assistant and four years later, at the age of 25, became VP of programming for Jacor and later Clear Channel Radio after the two companies merged. In 2001, as part of his VP of programming responsibilities, Compton began overseeing programming for Premiere Radio Networks, a division of Clear Channel.

In April 2008 at age 34, Compton was named SVP of programming and entertainment for Tribune and in 2010, at the age of 36, he was elevated to president.

James R. Conschafter

President, Market Leader, Media General, Inc.

James R. Conschafter is president and market leader for Media General’s Virginia/Tennessee market.

Conschafter joined Media General in 2000 as VP and GM of television stations WSPA, WASV and WNEG. In 2004, he was promoted to SVP, broadcast stations for the company’s Broadcast Division, where he had oversight responsibilities for nine network-affiliated television stations. In 2009, Conschafter was named president and market leader for the North Carolina market. In this capacity, he led the company’s print, broadcast, online and mobile operations throughout North Carolina.

Before joining Media General, Conschafter held management positions at network-affiliated television stations in North Carolina, New York, Missouri and Ohio.

Alan Frank

President & CEO, Post-Newsweek Stations

Alan Frank became president and CEO of Post-Newsweek Stations, Inc. in January 2000. Before this, he was VP and GM of WDIV, the Post-Newsweek station in Detroit. Frank has served as chairman and/or on the executive committee of many national trade organizations, including the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB); the Television Bureau of Advertising (TVB); the Network Affiliated Station Alliance (NASA); the NBC and ABC affiliate association boards of directors; Maximum Service Television (MSTV); the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC); and the Broadcasters Foundation. In addition, he is on the board of directors of Internet Broadcasting. In 2005 he was named Broadcasting and Cable’s “Broadcaster of the Year.”

Frank joined Post-Newsweek in 1979 as program manager for WDIV in Detroit. In 1986 he became VP of programming and production for Post-Newsweek Stations, Inc. While GM of WDIV he negotiated the purchase of Michigan’s regional cable sports system which he supervised until sold to Fox Sports in 1997.

Before joining WDIV, Frank held a number of management positions with Group W including program manager at WJZ-TV, Baltimore, WBZ-TV, Boston, executive producer at KPIX-TV, San Francisco, and production manager for the “David Frost Revue.”

Brian Lawlor

SVP, Television, E.W. Scripps

Brian Lawlor was named SVP of television for the E.W. Scripps Television Station Group in January 2009. Before this appointment, Lawlor served one year as VP of sales for the television division and four years as VP and GM of Florida’s top-rated TV station, WPTV – the NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach. Lawlor’s tenure at the station was spent extending new initiatives of the station by launching multiple news and weather websites, a 24-hour digital weather channel and South Florida’s first high-definition local newscasts. Lawlor had the opportunity to lead the station through three hurricanes, including Hurricane Frances when the station lost much of its roof and continued to broadcast through the storm without sharing its challenges with its viewers.

Lawlor has 20 years experience in the broadcast industry, 15 years of which have been with Scripps. He worked his way up through the sales side of the business, working as an account executive at the NBC stations in Wilkes-Barre, PA, West Palm Beach and Miami before assuming management responsibilities at WPTV in national and local sales. In 2000, Lawlor moved within the Scripps organization to join WCPO as general sales manager. Four years later, he returned to WPTV as VP and GM.

Lawlor is active in the television industry, sitting on the NAB Board, the Open Mobile Video Coalition and the NBC Affiliates Board; acting as the board liaison to the NBC Promotion and NBC NewsChannel boards.

Paul McTear

President & CEO, Raycom Media, Inc.

Paul McTear joined Raycom Media in February 1997 as CFO with responsibilities including traditional financial oversight plus operating responsibilities for Raycom Sports. In July of 2001, McTear was promoted to the position of president and CEO following the retirement of CEO, John Hayes. The company has grown to the largest privately owned TV broadcast company in the US, now owning and/or operating 42 television stations in 18 states and covering more than 10.6% of U.S. television households. Raycom stations are the news leaders in the majority of their markets.

McTear was previously at the Providence Journal Company for 20 years where he was VP of finance and corporate development. There, McTear was involved with acquisitions, strategic and financial planning, and corporate development. He was also instrumental in the launch of two cable programming networks, Television Food Network and America’s Health Network. In addition, McTear had financial overview of The Providence Journal’s cable, paging and cellular telephone companies.

McTear serves on the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Board of Directors, NBC’s Affiliate Board, and heads a Small Market Coalition formed to keep small market broadcast issues in the forefront. Additionally, he serves on the board of directors of WideOrbit, WorldNow, MSTV and MyWeather.

Valari Staab

President, NBC Owned Television Stations

Valari Staab is president of NBC Owned Television Stations. In this role, Staab oversees the company’s 10 owned television stations, its associated online properties and digital out-of-home division, its local lifestyle programming production company and its in-house marketing and promotion company.

Staab has worked in local television for 30 years, primarily at the ABC Owned Television Stations, serving in a variety of roles in general management, research and creative services. Before assuming her current role, she was president and GM of KGO-TV, the market leading station in San Francisco, for eight years. Under Staab’s leadership, KGO-TV increased the amount of locally produced programming by more than 50% and expanded its digital efforts to reach new viewers, including streaming newscasts, launching an iPad app and increasing its social media outreach. During her tenure, KGO-TV received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Northern California Emmy for Station Excellence and The Radio and Television News Directors Association’s Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence.

Before leading KGO-TV, Staab served as president and GM of WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham for a year and at KFSN-TV in Fresno for nearly four years. She worked at WPVI-TV in Philadelphia for a decade, where she held the roles of director of creative services and director of marketing and research. Previously, she worked in marketing and research for KPRC-TV in Houston and KLTV-TV in Tyler, Texas, where she started her broadcast career as a college student.

Throughout her professional life, Staab has been active in her community. She currently serves on the Board of the NBCUniversal Foundation and has been a longtime supporter of the United Way.
