MULTI-AWARD-WINNING ENTERTAINER AND ACTIVIST COMMON SET FOR HEADLINE KEYNOTE CONVERSATION WITH AUTHOR CLEO WADE AT 2019 PROMAX CONFERENCE

RESPONDING TO INDUSTRY CONSOLIDATION AND EVOLUTION, PROMAX EXPANDS TO REFLECT THE NEEDS OF ENTERTAINMENT MARKETERS IN TRANSITION OR MOVING INTO NEW ROLES AT ANNUAL ‘HOMECOMING’ EVENT
WORLD’S LARGEST ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING CONFERENCE TO TAKE PLACE JUNE 4-6, 2019 AT JW MARRIOTT AT L.A. LIVE IN DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES  – April 11, 2019 — Multi-award-winning entertainer Common will headline the 2019 Promax Conference in June, as the world’s largest entertainment marketing event grows even larger with an additional day of content and programming, and expanding from three days to four, organizers announced. The conference will take place from June 4-6, 2019 at the JW Marriott at L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles, following a special, invite-only day of programming on June 3 for professionals in between jobs.

Promax, the global member association for the entertainment marketing community, announced that the decision to expand its flagship event — known as an annual ‘Homecoming’ for the profession — was driven by the need to serve the pressing needs of a community faced with unprecedented change and disruption.

“Promax proudly supports the career development needs of our members throughout the year, but as we see our community face the pain of job loss — and the excitement that comes with shifting into new areas – it is critical that we step up and provide them with the tools and skills they need to thrive in this new competitive landscape,” said Steve Kazanjian, President and CEO of Promax. “We are adding a day to our agenda as a way of telling our community that Promax has their professional backs.”

Promax 2019 features a lineup of powerful and insightful speakers, including a keynote conversation with the hip-hop artist , actor and author of Let Love Have the Last Word, Common. The Oscar, Emmy, Golden Globe and three-time GRAMMY Award-winner will sit down with Cleo Wade, poet, artist and author of best-selling book Heart Talk: Poetic Wisdom for a Better Life.

“Earlier this year, Promax launched a new brand and campaign around the theme, ‘We Love What You Do,’ so it’s incredibly fitting to spotlight artists such as Common and Cleo Wade, whose work embraces this message of love, community, and diverse storytelling,” Kazanjian said.

Among the changes announced today by Kazanjian:

  • For entertainment marketers in transition between jobs: Promax 2019 will also introduce a special, limited-seating day of programming on Monday, June 3 as part of their previously-announced Transition Assistance Program (TAP). Open to current Promax members who are in transition and seeking new employment – including those whose jobs have been impacted by the recent wave of industry mergers and acquisitions. This day will be devoted to job transition insights, skills and tools needed in today’s environment. Experts will be on hand to offer advice on such actionable topics as how to get past the recruiter to the hiring managers, updating your headshot and how to optimize your LinkedIn profile. TAP is an initiative of the Promax People and Culture Council. For more information on TAP, please contact Shaun-Teka Joyner at shaun.joyner@promaxbda.org.

  • For entertainment marketers moving into new roles: Promax 2019 has added a new full-day of longer format sessions on Tuesday, June 4, centered on the unmet needs of community members in 2019. These “Deep Dives” will focus on three timely topics:
    • Leadership Now: Org charts aren’t the only thing changing after the mergers. Inheriting new employees, integrating new cultures, and learning all-new ways to get work done are the new normal. This deep-dive leadership workshop will show you how to keep your team focused, inspired, and moving forward when surrounded by uncertainty.
    • D2C: Direct to Consumer: Everything’s changing. The viewer is the programmer – they can watch whatever they want, whenever they want, wherever they want. If your company isn’t "direct to consumer" yet, it will be soon! Here we will teach you how to thrive in a D2C world.
    • Streaming Creative: Network IDs and lower thirds are SO five years ago. Designing for streaming platforms is a new skill that we all need to learn. In this workshop, we’re throwing out the old network toolkit and raising the bar on branding. Learn how to engage your audience quickly, before getting them to their next binge.

  • For all entertainment marketers: on Wednesday, June 5, and Thursday, June 6, Promax 2019 will offer up a mix of inspiring main stage headliners and sessions focused on 12 key themes: Beyond Branded Content; Sports Marketing; Big Screens Go Small; Culture Club; The Art of Design; Social Studies; You Say Vendor, I Say Partner; OTT (Yeah, You Know Me); 360°/365; Rebrand Case Studies; Data & Design; and Leadership for Creative Executives.

Among the speakers scheduled to bring their wide range of expertise and valuable insights to the Promax community are: design luminary Debbie Millman (Design Matters), fashion designer and author Dana Spinola, as well as leading senior marketing executives Becky Daugherty (ABC Entertainment), Mike Benson (Amazon Studios), Ryan Crosby (Hulu), and Linda Schupack (AMC Networks), Josh Line (Comedy Central, Paramount, and TVLand), Jackson George (Walt Disney Pictures), Tricia Melton (Freeform), Maria Pekurovskaya (Universal Pictures), and Whit Friese (CNN). Additional speakers will be announced in the coming weeks. Registration information for Promax 2019 is at promax.tv/2019.
