2014 Europe Industry Achievement Awards Recipient

 
Graham McCallum

Creative Director, Kemistry

Graham McCallum has led the way in many of the most important developments in graphic design and visual communication for the broadcast industries. He began his career in the graphics department at BBC in 1966, where he worked on several of the most iconic children’s programs of the era, the groundbreaking comic strip “Jane,” and the “Blackadder” series. He also cultivated a lucrative sideline in illustration and publishing for various books and magazines, including creating double-page spreads for Playboy.

McCallum’s commitment to embracing state-of-the-art technology in graphic design earned him more than 20 major international awards including two BAFTAs, several PromaxBDA awards, and The Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

He established his first agency, MKD, in 1986, where he and his team created titles for the ITV’s snooker coverage—which won him his first Royal Television Society Award—and also developed the branding for the launch of The Discovery Channel.

McCallum founded Kemistry with Ricky Churchill in 1997 and has since established the agency as one of Europe’s leaders in branding and visual communication in the broadcast industries. It also boasts a gallery that offers a unique showcase in London for both classic and contemporary design while echoing McCallum and the Kemistry agency’s attitude: an ardent admiration of the heritage of design, and an ambitious, forward-thinking approach to design today.

Mike Alderson

Co-Founder, Creative Director, ManvsMachine


Mike Alderson co-founded and is actively creative director of ManvsMachine—a London-based branding and motion design studio that leads its industry with its creative talent and works with clients such as Nike, Apple, and Microsoft. The studio has won consecutive Cannes Gold Lion awards, in addition to a D&AD Yellow Pencil award.

Alderson has been the recipient of a Promax Student Gold Award and started his career as a mechanical engineer at a glass factory before making his way into the motion design industry.

Michael Barry

Creative Director, BT Television


As creative director for BT Television, Michael Barry is responsible for the on-screen branding, presentation, and promotions for the network’s on-demand platforms. Barry previously worked for MTV as senior vice president and managing director, where he oversaw the programming, scheduling, acquisition, marketing, and promotions of the nine United Kingdom and Ireland channels, including MTV, VH1, and TMF. He has also worked with Universal Studio Networks as world wide creative director.

Aporva Baxi

Aporva Baxi co-founded creative agency DixonBaxi with Simon Dixon in 2001. He has a global reputation as a leading creative in branding and design, and is sought out by some of the world’s most forward-thinking companies to help them connect with and inspire their audiences. As Executive Creative Director at DixonBaxi, he is passionate about the value of creativity in business, and has helped organisations including Eurosport, Freeview, Telemundo and Sony to build brands with purpose and emotion.

Nikki Bentley

Dan Biddle

Head of Broadcast Partnerships, Twitter, UK


Dan Biddle, head of broadcast partnerships in the United Kingdom for Twitter, works closely with broadcasters and production companies to effectively use the Twitter platform by creating engaging content and events that bring audiences closer to the shows they love. Before joining Twitter in 2012, Biddle was editorial lead for social media at BBC Vision, where he worked on the social media campaign for the BAFTA award-winning BBC Two series Virtual Revolution. Neville Brody

Director, Brody Associates; Dean of the School of Communication, Royal College of Art


As head of Brody Associates, internationally renowned graphic designer, typographer, art director and brand strategist, Brody, provides insight and methodology that pushes creative boundaries. Brody works with internal teams strategically and creatively to advise clients and inspire the wider creative community. In addition to his responsibilities at Brody Associates, he is a professor and the dean of the School of Communication at the RCA in London, lectures and publishes on design worldwide, and contributes to a wide range of cultural and educational activities. Brody was also president of D&AD in 2013.

Andy Bryant

Managing Director, Red Bee


Andy joined Red Bee in 2002 and has led the team to success in the UK and across many global markets, establishing Red Bee's reputation as a leader in TV brand identity and promotion and as a pioneer in content marketing on moving screens.

He has more than 30 years experience in advertising, marketing, broadcasting and strategic consultancy, both in the UK and Australia. He was managing director at The Campaign Palace, then Australia's most highly regarded creative and strategic advertising agency, and previously head of client services at Bates UK.

A frequent speaker at leading industry conferences including the Media Guardian Edinburgh International TV Festival, European Broadcasting Union and Promax, Andy has presented on TV brand strategy and creativity across Europe and in the US, Asia and Australia. He is an honorary professor of film & TV studies at the University of Nottingham and also an independent member of the governing council of the University of Sussex.

Patrick Burgoyne

Patrick Burgoyne has been the editor of “Creative Review” magazine since 1999. Before joining the magazine as a staff writer, he worked in marketing for The Body Shop and later for the University of Westminster while also moonlighting as a writer for magazines such as “The Big Issue.” He is also the author of several books on design and visual culture and has written for many publications, including “The Independent,” “Scotland on Sunday,” “Arena” and “La Repubblica.”

Jess Butcher

As chief marketing office and co-founder of Blippar—the global market-leading augmented reality platform many of the world’s most famous brands and media publications have adopted—Jess Butcher oversees the rapid international expansion of the brand and consumer-marketing divisions. Butcher previously oversaw EMEA Business Development at Alibaba.com, headed-up partnerships with leisure e-aggregato isango.com, which is reputable for its exponential growth, and founded Integritour—a tour-operator that promotes community tourism and job creation in the most impoverished parts of West Kenya. Butcher has also been named as one of the “Top 10 Most Powerful Entrepreneurs” by Fortune in 2012, was recently shortlisted as “Entrepreneur of the Year” in The Independent’s “Women of the Future,” and regularly contributes articles to magazines Marie Claire, Company, and Stylist.

Gareth Capon

CEO, Grabyo


Gareth Capon brings over 15 years of experience to his role as chief executive officer of Grabyo—a video start-up that enables broadcasters and content rights holders to create, share, and monetize live TV clips in real-time. Capon previously was a product development director at BSkyB, where he managed Sky’s award-winning mobile app portfolio, in addition to driving social TV initiatives and leading investments in start-ups throughout Europe and North America. Capon also founded a digital media consulting business and co-founded two start-up businesses that covered music, mobile, and social.

Pierluigi Colantoni

Creative Director & Head of Advertising, Rai Radiotevisione Italiana SpA


Pierluigi Colantoni was appointed Deputy Communication Director and Head of Creative Services on March 2015. Previously he was head of promotion for institutional and web campaign. From 2007 to 2012 he worked as Art Director & Head of Promotion for Rai2. Before joining Rai Pierluigi Colantoni collaborated for advertising agencies like Saatchi & Saatchi and BBDO.

Olivier Degrave

Head of On-Air Design, CANAL+


Olivier Degrave heads up the on-air design for all 29 pay channels in the CANAL+ group including CINE+, COMEDIE+, and SPORT+. Previously, he worked as art director for News Channel, special effects designer for VCF, and editor for ECPA. Degrave has also directed France’s first reality show, was instrumental in the launch of several television channels in France and Morocco, and was the red carpet director for international broadcasting at the Cannes film festival from 2001 to 2011.

Danixa Diaz

Executive Producer, Oishii Creative


Oishii Creative Executive Producer Danixa Diaz brings nearly 20 years of experience in the creative, design and production industries. Her contagious personality and passion for design has helped her cultivate solid relationships with major networks and brands from around the world.

Diaz began her entertainment career in Miami, focusing on the Hispanic and Latin American markets before expanding her expertise to domestic and international clients. She went on to executive produce at 3 Ring Circus, among many other pioneering branding and mixed-media companies, from New York to Los Angeles. In 2012, Diaz founded representation firm “iartists," and prior to that she spent seven years as director of business development for design and production studio Imaginary Forces.

Diaz has been an active member of several renowned industry organizations, including multiple years serving on the PromaxBDA Board of Directors; and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which invited her to sit on the Emmy Motion and Title Design Peer Group Executive Committee. She has also applied her experience to the world of education, serving as an instructor at the respected Otis College of Art and Design, as well as guest-speaking at the UCLA Extension program.

Jeroen Doucet

Managing Director, ComingNextTV


As managing director and co-founder of ComingNextTV—the strategy and concept unit of Ex Machina Group—broadcasters and production companies across the globe rely on Jeroen Doucet to create the next generation of TV content. Through his experience as director at Dutch public broadcaster VARA, as well as his work in digital media with clients like Red Bull, Doucet has become an authority digital media and television. He is also chairman to the taskforce second screen at the IAB.

Niclas Ekdahl

CEO, Viaplay AB


Chief executive officer, Niclas Ekdahl, heads up Viaplay—the leading streaming service in Nordic for thousands of movies, TV series, and world-class live sports. Ekdahl joined the network’s team in 2002 and started Viasat On Demand, which evolved into Viaplay, in 2011. Before becoming CEO, Ekdahl occupied the positions of senior vice president, vice president, head of Pay TV, head of creative services, and central marketing manager—all at Viasat.

Joe Fellows

Founder, Make Productions


Joe Fellows’ background in short films and animation provided the foundation for not only his award-winning career, but also for the founding of his boutique production company, Make Productions, which specializes in animation, short film, and online content.

Fellows has directed and animated many branding projects, title sequences, and idents for clients including Channel 4, Cartoon Network, and BBC. His work was recently featured on Vice and Intel’s “The Creator’s Project,” which celebrates the use of innovative technology by visionary artists across multiple disciplines.

Fabienne Fourquet

Director of Digital Content, CANAL+


Fabienne Fourquet joined the CANAL+ team in 2010 as a WebTV senior manager at CANAL+ Overseas and now holds the position of director of digital content. Fourquet began her career with A+E networks where she was in charge of launching the international digital distribution business.

Federico Gaggio

Federico leads multi-disciplinary teams in media organisations to help articulate brand purpose, devise strategies and actions to bring the brand story to life through all touch-points, and creating rewarding experiences that build strong connections with viewers.

Federico is an internationally recognised voice on brand building, marketing, advertising, digital engagement, user experience and design. Over the past 9 years he helped positioning Discovery Communications’ properties in the hearts and minds of viewers, engaging with them through content, storytelling and experiences. As VP Brand and Executive Creative Director he led marketing, digital and creative teams across Discovery’s European markets (24 brands in 22 territories). He is the architect and inspiration behind the multi-award winning Discovery Creative London – one of the most recognised and awarded in-house agencies in the industry.

Most recently he advised the Eurosport leadership team on reigniting the brand and realigning the organisation around its new ambitions. His role was to drive and coordinate brand strategy and creative executions, fostering collaborations between internal teams and external agencies.

Federico gained extensive experience building global brands by working for leading media organisations and creative agencies in the UK, US, Germany, France and Italy. His multiple industry recognitions include Cannes Lions, D&AD, Broadcast Awards, and over 100 Promax awards.

Gabriel Galluccio

Head Creative Europe and Africa, Fox International Channels


After a successful launch and seven years as the creative director of Sky Sport in Italy, Gabriel Galluccio became the platform creative director for Sky Italia in 2010. Galluccio is currently the head creative at Fox International Channels. 

Galluccio has been worked in television for over 20 years. Most of his work was on the coverage of sporting events. That led to work during the launch of Fox Sports in the US. He won three Emmys during his work for the coverage of NFL on Fox. He also worked on the rebranding of the Fox Broadcasting Company in the US that unified the look and feel of the original Fox network. He was the co-founder of Fresh Design, a design studio in LA.

In 2003 Galluccio moved to Milan for the Launch of Sky Italia. He was also involved on the launch of the Champions League coverage of Al Jazeera Sports, as well as promotion campaigns for Fox Turkey, The Ratana Group on the Middle East and LBC (Lebanon Broadcasting Company). He has worked on the coverage of several Olympic Games, NFL, NHL, MLB, Super Bowls, Champions Leagues, Italian Serie A and many other sporting events.

Yaron Gat

SVP, Head of Promotion & Creative, Keshet Broadcasting


Yaron Gat, senior vice president and head of promotion & creative at Keshet—Israel’s leading broadcaster—is responsible for the marketing of all the channel’s brands. Under his leadership, the promotion department has won numerous international awards and is considered to be one of the field’s most prominent departments. Gat also cofounded the PromaxBDA Creative Clinic, Israel—a local PromaxBDA convention that takes place yearly in Jerusalem and hosts some of the industry’s senior media and creative professionals.

Marco Giusti

SVP, Creative, NBCUniversal International


Marco Giusti is Senior Vice President, Creative, NBCUniversal International (NBCUI). Based in London, he is responsible for the creative strategy and evolution of NBCUniversal International Networks and Studios (the portfolio of channel brands outside the U.S. and the production division) – in addition to the company’s corporate brand.

Since joining NBCUI in 2012, Giusti has led award-winning rebrands for a number of the channels in the company’s portfolio. In 2013/4, the global refresh of Universal Channel in 103 countries won numerous international awards, including a Gold PROMAX Global Excellence Award.

In 2014/5 Marco and the in-house Creative & Marketing team led the repositioning and rebranding of both DIVA and Studio Universal. In 2016, he oversaw the creative execution of NBCUI’s next-gen reality SVOD service that’s uniquely integrated with social media, hayu.

Giusti’s remit includes leadership of an LA- based creative team responsible for the creation of the international promotions and campaigns for E! Entertainment Television and Telemundo Africa.

Before joining NBCUniversal, Marco was Vice President of Programming and Marketing, EMEA for Warner Bros, where he successfully developed and launched the Warner TV and Warner Films subscription on-demand channels on over 30 platforms.

Prior to this, he was Creative Director for a number of interactive platforms and one of the original founders of Tarantula, the award-winning European production network.

Giusti has won numerous awards including a BAFTA and EMMY for his work developing and designing pioneering on-demand television channels, and for his leading product and interface design work.

Evelyn Glennie

Musician


Winner of over 86 international awards including Dame Commander of the British Empire in 2009, Evelyn Glennie is the first person in musical history to successfully create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist, and as one of the most eclectic and innovative musicians in the world today, she is constantly redefining the goals and expectations of percussion. Glennie gives more than 100 performances a year while traveling around the world with great conductors, orchestras, and artists. Some of theses collaborations include DJ Yoda, dance choreographer Marc Brew, and fellow musicians Bjork, and Sting.

Glennie was a featured solo performer in the opening ceremony of the Deaf Olympics in Taipei in 2009, a guest performer in the Winter Olympics of 2002, and took a lead role in the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympics.

Her solo recordings—which now exceed 30 CDs—have earned her three Grammy awards and a BAFTA nomination. Glennie regularly appears on television programs across the world, including “The David Letterman Show,” “Sesame Street,” and “60 Minutes.” She has also proven herself a successful author with the publication of an autobiography and numerous articles for “Tom Tom Magazine.”

Glennie collaborates with geology departments to create new developments in the world of sound with natural materials like stones and rocks, gives presentations, and teaches classes to all types of instrumentalists around the world.

Joe Godwin

Director, BBC Children's


In his position as director, Joe Godwin is responsible for all of BBC’s children’s services, including the CBBC and CBeebies channels and websites and the CBeebies Radio online service. Godwin started his career with BBC in 1986, where he worked as studio director and producer on shows such as “Blue Peter,” “Going Live,” and “Record Breakers.” He moved to Nickelodeon UK in 2000, before rejoining the BBC team in 2005.

Godwin is a member of the BAFTA Children’s Committee, the Advisory Panel on Children’s Viewing of the British Board of Film Classification, and is a trustee of the National Museums Liverpool.

Holly Goodier

Director of Marketing and Audiences, Future Media, BBC


As director of marketing and audiences for Future Media, Holly Goodier oversees the team responsible for creative strategy, insight, marketing, and audience-inspired innovation across BBC digital media. Her work as a strategist, researcher, and innovation specialists focuses on applying insights about people, society, and media to the development of products, programs, and brands. Goodier has been with BBC for 10-plus years and has helped create BBC iPlayer, overseen prominent events including the Olympics, shaped shows such as Crimewatch,, and was a driving force behind the network’s digital innovation program, Connected Studio. Goodier worked in advertising and product management before joining the BBC team.

Tamás Hermecz

Head of Creative Services, Chello Central Europe Zrt.


With a degree in set design, Tamás Hermecz worked in the movie industry from 1996 to 1998 before turning to television and CME’s TV3 in Hungary. In 2003, he joined SPTI as Regional Art Director, building the team and launching AXN. Hermecz joined Chello Central Europe in 2008 where he oversees 11 brands and 28 feeds.

Dennis Hodges

Award-winning photographer Dennis Hodges blends the things he loves—strategy, creativity, and photography—to help the companies he works with shape their ideas. Hodges has led strategic and creative marketing, sales, and content initiatives for a number of companies in the entertainment sector throughout Europe and the United States for the past 30 years. Before founding New Perspective, Hodges was vice president of marketing, sales, and content strategy at UPC where he led key initiatives throughout Central and Eastern Europe.

Mark Jackson

Chief Technology Catalyst EMEA, McCann Worldgroup


Mark Jackson, chief technology catalyst for McCann Worldgroup in EMEA, began his career as a designer, developer, and project manager for digital agencies working on brands such as Nike, HSBC, and Formula One. Jackson eventually began to work as a consultant before he was recruited to lead the digital offering of a new start-up agency. In 2008 Jackson became digital client services director for McCann Manchester where he applied digital strategic thinking across key accounts and managed strategic aspects of large engagements. He moved into his current role in 2010 and focuses on delivering innovation and technology enablement for global clients.

Alan James

Co-Founder, James&Wilkinson Media


Alan James co-founded James&Wilkinson Media (JWM) in 2011 following more than 25 years of experience in media, encompassing both advertising as the broadcast buying director within the WPP group, and in broadcast as the BBC’s first head of media planning.

At the BBC, managing a team of 50 people, James was responsible for the on-air media strategy and implementation of marketing activities across all the corporation’s TV, radio and digital services. James&Wilkinson Media works exclusively with broadcasters to help them maximise the power of their own promotional resource, which is often dramatically under-valued. This is done through their ARR™ (Audit, Review, Recommend) process – a combination of media model creation, process review and training. In JWM’s short existence, it has worked with broadcasters in almost 30 countries across five continents. James is a regular speaker on the international conference arena and has given sessions at PromaxBDA events in Asia, India, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Europe.

Andrew Kidger

Executive Creative Director/Producer, Creative Heist


An experienced broadcast marketing specialist with more than 20 years in the industry, Kidger is currently consultant Executive Producer/Director for UK-based ad agency Cravens, overseeing their TV and digital production. Previous roles include SVP On-air Marketing at Chello Zone where he launched and re-launched brands such as CBS International, Food Network, Extreme Sports and the Horror Channel. Prior to that he was Senior Producer at National Geographic channel and spent several years as a creative at ITV. Since going independent, KIdger has done stints at various branding and advertising agencies, worked on several news channel launches, produced a documentary and co-developed a children's animation project.

Christian Kurz

VP, Research & Insights, Viacom International Media Networks


As vice president of research and insights for Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), Christian Kurz is responsible for providing the company’s businesses and operations with strategic, consumer-based research. His guidance is used to inform international business decisions across all brands—and their platforms—of the company’s portfolio, including MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central. His next steps took him to a SVP Marketing Position with RTL2 to now joining the dmcgroup as the executive creative director and managing director for their Munich branch specializing in TV Design and Channel Branding. As a Creative Director and Director for diverse Campaigns and Channel Rebrands he has been the recipient of many industry awards, including Promax, ADC and Cannes International Festival.

Daniel Levine

Director, The Avant-Guide Institute, Global Editor, WikiTrend.org


World-renowned trends expert, Daniel Levine, is the global editor of the popular social trends website WikiTrend.org and the leader of The Avant-Guide Institute—an international team of trend spotters with over 9,000 researchers who chronicle the latest ideas, products, and experiences from around the world. In addition, Levine works as a consultant, helping consumer-oriented brands and businesses be more innovative, inspirational, and profitable. Levine is regularly featured in newspapers and magazines and frequently appears on television and radio shows such as CNN and NBC.

Karsten Lund

Alberto Mattiello

Co-Founder, Eyevel


Alberto Mattiello is head of international, innovation- accelerator hub JWT X and co-founder of eyevel.com—a site that introduces Google Glass technology to the entertainment industry.  In his roles, Mattiello manages strategic business relationships and helps clients build cultures of innovation.  He also conducts innovation workshops, is a speaker with many business groups, and teaches at Bocconi University.  Previously, Mattiello co-founded creative, Italian agency LabNext, which Wired magazine dubbed, ”The Italian Think Tank."

Nicola Mendelsohn

VP EMEA, Facebook


Nicola Mendelsohn, vice president of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa operations at Facebook, is responsible for growing the company’s advertising revenue and improving relationships with brands in these areas. In addition to her duties at Facebook, Mendelsohn is also a director of the Women’s Prize for Fiction and a trustee of the White Ribbon Alliance.

Before joining Facebook in 2013, Mendelsohn was executive producer and partner at advertising agency Karmarama, deputy chairman of Grey London, and board director at BBH. She recently stepped down as president of the IPA (the advertising industry trade body), and is the only woman to have occupied this position in IPA’s 96-year history. Mendelsohn has been featured in Management Today’s “Top 35 Women Under 35” and was named “International Woman to Watch” by Advertising Age and “CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) Achiever of the Year” in 2011. 

Peter Mihola

Head of Art & Creative, SPT Networks, AXN Central Europe


Peter Mihola, head of art & creative at SPT Networks, manages all on- and off-air creative solutions for AXN’s Central European brands. He has worked on two successful rebrands of two channels, as well as a repositioning of three. Mihola has previously held the positions of senior writer and promo producer and copywriter during his tenure at SPT Networks and has also worked as a copywriter and promo producer at HBO Central Europe. Mihola has been the recipient of many industry awards, including the PromaxBDA World Gold Awards and the CTAM Cap Awards.

He has also been the recipient of numerous Promax awards as a director and TV creative.

Filip Nilsson, international creative director and executive vice president of BETC, formerly worked as president of Forman & Bodenfors—the Swedish agency that brought IKEA, Volvo, and Volvo Trucks to world attention with cutting edge creative and digital campaigns. Under Nilsson’s leadership, the agency won 69 Lions in Cannes, as well as numerous other awards from around the world, in addition to being named The World’s Best Digital Agency by “The Gunn Report.” When he left in 2013, F&B was by far the biggest and most successful agency in Scandinavia.
